Landport Youth Centre Now Open - 14th September 2009

The management committee of Landport Youth Centre was delighted to announce that Landport Youth Centre finally opened its doors at 7pm on 8th September. The Mayor of Lewes Amanda Dean cut the ribbon and officially welcomed young people, local residents and anyone else with an interest in using the community facility. It has been a tough year for the management committee. The building had to be closed down last autumn because of health and safety concerns and then a burst pipe caused extensive damage to the kitchen area during the cold spell in January. This added to financial difficulties when it was discovered that the building had not been properly insured. The first requirement therefore was a large fundraising effort. The committee is especially grateful to Awards for All which granted a vital £7,800 towards electrical works and essential outside work. However, the Centre would not now be re-opening without additional grants from Lewes Town Council, from the county Youth Development Service and from the crime prevention partnership at the District cCuncil. Cllr Susan Murray, chair of the management committee says, “It has been a particularly challenging time down at the youth centre. Throughout the committee has been deeply aware of how unfortunate it is that the young people have been forced into using compromise facilities ranging from a bus, to the community rooms to the fresh air. We are now looking forward to seeing youth activities re-established in the building and we hope very much that lots of local residents will come along to the opening to see the range of facilities on offer that can be hired at very reasonable rates. Now that the building is in reasonable repair (though there is always more to do!) we hope to seeing the building well-used throughout the day, evenings and weekends. I’d like to thank all the bodies who made the grants that have enabled us to reopen. I’d also like to thank all the builders and others who have done such excellent work on the centre. And i’d especially like to thank the young people for their patience as we struggled to provide them and the rest of the community with the community resource they deserve. Long may it flourish!” More information from Susan Murray on 473912
